I'm very disappointed in this book. And I'm doubly disappointed by the glowing reviews that caused me to spend $15.95 to buy this book. The "Writing class" consists of 11 chapters that are actually verbatim transcripts of Bill Idelson teaching, with all the coaxing and suggesting to the students, and all the Hollywood stories, and no real nuts and bolts specific information on writing a script. The meat of each chapter could be summed up in one sentence, so for eleven chapters that would be just 11 sentences. And those single summary sentences do not actually teach you a skill. So those eleven chapters, about half only 3 or 4 pages long, are contained in just 63 pages. The next 114 pages are superfluous, describing Hollywood success stories, with photos of real writers (Wow, what a treat this was!) then two TV scripts the author and a partner wrote DECADES AGO--one for "Get Smart" and the other for the "Andy Griffith Show." But he provides no analysis of why they were written the way they were, or specific techniques or skills that were used, no teaching at all about the actual scripts. So I think the only purpose of including the scripts, using up 103 pages, was just to pad a book that had no real value, to give the illusion that it might be worth the money. Trust me, it is not.Product details

BILL IDELSON'S WRITING CLASS A SCRIPTWRITING CURRICULUM edition by Bill Idelson Reference eBooks Reviews
There's some good information here but his style is hard to take. I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could but doesn't allow that.
This was a great book with such clear and simple advice and methods for creating a compelling story and script. He really breaks it down to the nitty gritty. No bloated, self congratulatory "Hollywood BS". Just very easy "rules" to follow on how to create a compelling story. I loved this book!
I didn't have time to read a 600 page book on screenwriting. I finished this book in 2 hours and walked away with a good understanding of HOW to write a screen play. If you want information on conquering writer's block, finding an agent, or learning how to handle rejection, then you will want a more "comprehensive" book than this one. If you want to know what makes a good screenplay and how to write it, then this book is for you.
I have purchased almost 20 books on screenwriting(The Story-Robert Mckee,The Screenplay-Syd Fields, basically all of them really) and this book sums it all up of what writing is all about more so than those other books. Be it a novel or screenplay. If you have not purchased any screenplay books and looking for one to buy. Well you are lucky that this book was written. Let this be your first and only book on how to write a story.
McKee's book on screenwriting is excellent, but Bill Idelson's book has practice assignments and is written
in a really easy to read, easy to absorb style.. brevity. This man gave a career to many aspiring writers through his
teaching. He is no longer with us, but his lessons are!
In art, it's what you do with the basics that define your talent.
Instead of saving cats and character low points, the late, great Bill Idelson shares basic tools to help writers get out of their way and tell a story.
Not the only book on writing for television one should have but a definite must have for the collection.
Bonus two classic tv scripts - Get Smart & Andy Griffith!!
At first I wondered why the version was only 99¢.
It's because absolutely no effort was given to pagination. Sometimes a single letter is on the line. Sometimes words are crammed together. It's wrong from the front to the back. It's a very challenging books to read, which is a shame because it's probably a pretty good book. Unfortunately you have to copy edit it as you read to try to make sense of what the author wrote.
