WHOA! Are They Glad You're in Their Lives? bw_ed Allan J Cox 9781938610028 Books

We all need an Allan Cox in our lives. If only, each one of us followed the wisdom encapsulated in this enchanting book, we could bring heaven to earth within one generation.

This book, with its refined simplicity, powerfully sums up all the teachings in the Bible, the Koran, the Talmud and the Tao combined; dilutes them so that they are easy to absorb & assimilate; and renders them practicable. He removes all the dogma, fear & confusion and re-introduces the concepts in a delightfully beautiful and provocative way. To me, it encapsulates Christ-consciousness which is the distinction between being a Christian and being Christ-like. This book overrides the complexities of religion.

Very little makes me cry. This book brought tears to my eyes because it demonstrates how simple it is to create a life of bliss for ourselves and others, yet we all so mysteriously miss the mark.

Nothing I say could do justice to this book. I wish I could give it 10 Stars.

WHOA! Are They Glad You're in Their Lives? bw_ed Allan J Cox 9781938610028 Books Reviews

For me, the title "Are they glad you're in their lives?" is perhaps one of the greatest thought starters I've come across. It really focuses the mind! The book itself significantly helps one to answer the title's question and also prompts introspection in a myriad of ways following the exhortation "know thyself".
I enjoyed this book immensely. It is something you can pick up and read at your leisure in some places open the book, and read that poem and enjoy the photography. You will positively learn from Allan Cox's writings, such as " See the Wonder of Small Things, (wk. 3); "Go to the Country" & "Go to the City", (wks. 11 &12). How about, "Health", "Fear", "Harvest" . This book is absolutely loaded with more than interesting knowledge and feelings and beautiful photos, that it is a must read.

After coaching dozens of CEOs who are singularly focused on creating a lasting company, Allan has finally written a book that gets to what's really important. He cleverly addresses the critical questions of What do I want to have? What do I want to do? Who do I want to be? And he does it with quotes, poetry, and visual images that CEOs are not usually comfortable with causing further introspection. A "must read" for those who wish to enhance their life as well as their bottom line.
There are so many pages that introduce this man and his work to you, before you ever get to this man and his work. Don't let that stop you. There is simplicity in the depth of his profound point of view. This is a book to open when life presents a turning point or a brief spell to reconsider. Life is all about choices, but often we rush around too fast to really think about what we really feel. To know one's self and of the gifts we can offer to those we love is nothing to lose sight of in this life. This book will encourage you to reconsider and then recommit.
Allan has a way of reminding me of deep longings and connections we have and their power in helping to navigate this world. Allan doesn't put out a "do this" or "don"t do that" listing of techniques. Instead he asks the questions and makes the observation in such a way that makes me think and relate to where I am and want to be. Reading it is a good break from the "getting and spending" of everyday life.
It is an easy book to keep coming back to because the themes work on lots of different levels and situations. Every time I pick it up, it is as if I read a different book while the themes are the same their shades change. The tweets serve as a shorthand to invoke a much larger lesson. They are kind of like a mental sorbet - not too much and refreshing to the mental palate. Adding the pictures to augment the themes were unexpected fun. While the cover was the most obvious, others weren't but it was fun trying to figure them out!
I love that this book is packed full of all sorts of "quotable" thoughts. They are just the sort of thing I collect and scribble inside of my mountain of journals. Some of my favorites include

1. Then, look into each other's eyes; just say yes, yes, yes and go from there.

2. How you handle failure is a key determinant of what your options can be afterwards. Don't compound failure by being a jerk.

That last line - about being a jerk - made me laugh out loud. It felt so unexpected and it was at that moment, I fell in love with the book.
There are a million books out there on how people can become better managers. But this is the first one I've seen on how managers can become better people. Drawing on his years of experience, Mr. Cox challenges readers to look inside themselves and draw out and develop their more human side.

"Whoa!" is full of thought-provoking quotes, counter-intuitive views and oft-overlooked truths. Delivering wisdom in daily bite-sized chunks, Mr. Cox gently leads you to explore what's really valuable - both in business and in life. It's a year-long course in self-improvement. And much needed in today's cut-throat, MBA-crazed, take-no-prisoners business world.

Without ever saying so directly, the author argues quite convincingly that the best leaders are those who are the most human. "Whoa!" should be required reading in every college business program.
